Blissfully Natural Massages

My beliefs are aligned with Chiropractic philosophy, which is based on the scientific fact that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism, controlled by the brain, spinal cord and nerves of the body.  Alignment of the skeletal structure, a balanced muscular frame, proper nutrition, and exercise are some of the key factors in aiding the bodies’ self-regulating mechanisms. I believe that thoughts, toxins, and trauma bring (dis) ease into the body so it is important to try to have as much balance in your life as possible with today’s hectic lifestyles. Mind, Body, and Soul in unity brings optimal health.

If science fails to bring answers, I lean not on my own understanding, but trust in the Lord to work it out to our good.

Blissfully Natural Massages

Swedish Massage . . .

A relaxing massage using long, soothing strokes to relax the mind, body and spirit. Swedish massage is particularly to allow the body to absorb more oxygen, thereby rejuvenating the body. Swedish massage is also geared towards detoxification by increasing the speed by which the cells of the body eliminate their waste materials.

Therapeautic Massage . . .

A therapeutic massage is very specific to areas of the body that have been causing chronic pain from over exertion, injury, or postural imbalances. Deep tissue and Trigger point therapies are used to release knots, contracted and tense muscle tissue. Communication between the therapist and the person receiving the massage is essential to get maximum results. This is Becky’s most requested service.

About Deep Tissue . . .

Deep Tissue Massage is aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscles and fascia (connective tissue surrounding the muscles for structural support and protection). Many of the same strokes used in Swedish Massage are employed, but the pressure will be more intense and the massage itself will be more focused, concentrating on specific areas rather than a general massage for the whole body.

Chronic muscle tension that has built up over a period of time greatly restricts blood flow to the muscles. This blocks the oxygen and nutrients the muscles need to function properly, leading to a build-up of toxins and inflammation of the muscles. Deep tissue work helps interrupt the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the affected areas. Once these stress patterns are released, the toxins are flushed out, the muscle tissue loosens, and blood flow is restored to a more normal level. Deep tissue massage also aids in breaking up, and even eliminating, scar tissue. ^ Back

About Trigger Points . . .

A trigger point is an accumulation of waste products around a nerve receptor and usually manifests itself as a tender nodule or knot within soft tissue (muscle). Trigger points are very common and can form in muscles that have been overexerted, injured due to an accident, or traumatized due to surgery. Something as simple as poor posture can cause the formation of trigger points.

Trigger points exist in two states: latent and active. A latent trigger point does not cause pain unless directly compressed, and the pain is felt only at the site of pressure; most people are not even aware of any latent trigger points that may have formed within their muscles. An active trigger point exhibits muscle pain (sharp pain, dull ache, tingling, numbness, bolts of heat or cold through muscle) without compression. When pressure is applied to an active trigger point, pain will commonly be felt in a different area of the body (referred pain).

Trigger point therapy is a technique that uses static compression (pressure) to active trigger points to relieve pain and discomfort in other parts of the body. This is an intense and very focused form of bodywork.

Trigger point massage is the combination of trigger point therapy and Swedish massage concentrating on the areas in which trigger points have formed. Massage strokes will be used first to warm up the muscles and locate trigger points. Active trigger points will then be diffused one at a time, and finally, additional massage strokes will be employed to help soothe the muscles that have just been worked.

Trigger point massage is not a relaxing, passive type of massage. The client’s participation to communicate the presence of trigger points and the intensity of discomfort is essential to maximize the effectiveness of the treatment.

Diffusing active trigger points releases endorphins, so not only is pain and discomfort eliminated, but a sense of increased energy and well-being is experienced. It is common to obtain significant relief after one treatment, and after repeated treatments, the muscles will be re-educated to stay in a lengthened position, resulting in relief of tension, swelling and stiffness, greater flexibility and range of motion, and improved circulation and coordination. ^ Back

Sports Massage . . .

Many of the strokes used in Sports massage stem from the classic Swedish massage, but the application of the strokes is where the difference lies. A Sports massage will be deeper, more vigorous, more intense, and will require more participation from the client; this is not a passive form of bodywork.

About Sports Massage . . .

Effleurage, the long gliding strokes used to begin most every massage, will be used throughout a sports massage at increasing levels of pressure. This rhythmical, deep stroking will help increase circulation and the stretching of muscle tissues.

Petrissage, or kneading, is used to mobilize fluids within deeper muscle structures, stretch these muscle fibers, and induce relaxation.

Compression, a simple pumping action directed into the belly of a muscle, spreads muscle tissue, creates hyperemia (increased blood flow), and softens tight muscle tissue.

Friction is performed at a faster tempo than in a regular Swedish massage and can be circular, transverse, or linear in application. This stroke is used to decrease muscle spasms, separate muscle fibers, increase circulation, and invigorate the person receiving the massage.

Vibration/jostling is used as an effective method of inducing a stressed muscle to relax.

Reciprocal inhibition is a form of stretching that involves the active participation of the client. As the therapist attempts to stretch a muscle or group of muscles, the client actively resists the therapist’s efforts for a period of 10 to 15 seconds. Once the stretching and the resistance are both stopped simultaneously, the muscle in question is given a few seconds to relax. When the therapist resumes the stretch of that same muscle, the flexibility will have increased noticeably. This cycle is repeated at least three times to maximize reduction of stiffness in the muscle.

The client will need to communicate with his or her therapist any areas of tension and intensity of discomfort during the massage to ensure the best possible results. ^ Back
